I also argue that contingent and individual choice-based accounts of the events in 1971 help perpetuate misperception and friction in current politics of the subcontinent. In this paper, I argue from a perspective of Neoclassical Realist theory of international policy-making that not only the separation of the two halves of Pakistan was highly predisposed but also a violent parting was highly likely. Most popular historical accounts of the events argue that the separation of the two halves of Pakistan was not an inevitable outcome but a product of contingency, world historical developments, and choices made by political actors. Within South Asian politics and society, events of the year 1971 with the bloody military crackdown on East Pakistan, the third India–Pakistan war, and subsequent emergence of Bangladesh as an independent country, still hold a living and outsized presence. It is bordered on three sides by India (4,025 km) and Burma (283 km). ![]() It is located on the eastern part of South Asia between the latitude 20.34 o and 26.45 o north and the longitude 88.01 o and 92.41 o east. Bangladesh is a deltaic formation with an approximate land-mass of 1,43,998 sq. This spirit was reflected in the war of independence in 1971. Fiercely nationalistic, highly individualistic and politically conscious, they have traditionally been known to attach great value to their national language and culture, independence and democratic tradition. Belonging to many faiths, over 90 per cent Muslim, the people of Bangladesh speak one language, Bengali, which proved to be a unifying force in welding the various subgroups into a homogeneous people. Ethnically, the people are a blend of many races including Austrics, Dravidians, Aryans, Mongols and Semitics. Bangladesh is a new independent sovereign state, but the cultural heritage of its people is steeped in history. ![]()
